$20 St. Gaudens

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2310
1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, wire rim. NGC graded MS-64. Popular high relief. Purest golden color satin frost is boldly hypnotic on this fresh-appearing MCMVII $20 gold piece from the initial year of the design. In light of that, we can also say this piece is nicely struck with extremely full details on both sides. Saint-Gaudens' flying eagle model was the design originally intended for the cent, but adopted on the $20 gold piece at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt. Models for a standing figure of Liberty originally had a pair of wings at her back but were dropped from the adopted design. Mintage: 12,367. Pop 203; 70 finer.
Estimated Value $28,000 - 30,000.

Lot 2311
1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, wire rim. PCGS graded MS-64. Well struck. Nice golden toning. Collectors who see one of these for the first time are almost all stunned by their beauty! And indeed, that is exactly what this is, a satiny beauty that draws ever so near to gem quality in all areas, especially to the unaided eye. Full yellow gold with a distinctive olive cast typical for these. Wire rim details, caused by the multiple blows of the dies rather than being part of the design, and this is seen around much of the obverse. A delightful example of President Theodore Roosevelt's "pet" project, a medal-like specimen in high relief with distinctive Roman numerals that would bedeck nicely any double eagle collection. 12,367 coins minted. Pop 954; 345 finer. (PCGS # 9135) .

"High Reliefs were struck in 3 blows of the dies on a medal press in the Philadelphia Mint," according to Stack's, in reference to a unique plain edge 1907 High Relief $20 gold piece the firm auction in January 2006. "The first two strikings were made utilizing a plain collar, presumably to prevent the raised edge lettering from being disfigured from successive strikings. It was only during the third striking that the plain collar was replaced by the lettered collar to produce a ''complete'' High Relief Double Eagle with Lettered Edge. Due to the work-hardening of metal that results from the pressures of the striking process, the as yet ''incomplete'' coin was removed from the press after the first and second strikings to be annealed, or softened by heating."
Estimated Value $28,000 - 30,000.

1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, wire rim. PCGS graded MS-63. Frosty. The satiny yellow-gold surfaces reveal traces of greenish patina in the fields that are fairly free of marks and hairlines. Only some stacking evidence on Liberty's knee and a few marks on the figure itself confine the grade. Although the grading holder limits the visual range, the edge on these coins is also impressive. E PLURIBUS UNUM appears in raised letters interspersed with stars from a three-segment collar that was used to confine the planchet in the press during coinage operations. The high relief Type of Saint -Gaudens' beautiful design is perhaps the single most significant 20th century gold issue of this or another other country (PCGS # 9135) .

Lot 2313
1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, wire rim. PCGS graded MS-63. The ideal specimen in bright yellow gold, with satiny surfaces on both sides. Ideal in that it combines high quality, resplendence beyond measure, and fair value, all in a single MS63 protective plastic cannister. Richly endowed with eye appeal, this piece stands proud within the class category as one of the nicer quality examples we have seen on the market in recent times.

The story of the Saint-Gaudens double eagle is well known. In 1905 President Theodore Roosevelt sought to enrich the creative design of American coinage, this after having seen some high relief ancient Greek coins on display at the Smithsonian Institution a stone's throw from the White House. He tapped Augustus Saint-Gaudens, America's famous sculptor, to revamp the entire coinage from the cent to the double eagle. Working in his studio in Cornish, New Hampshire, the ailing Saint-Gaudens prepared sketches for different denominations, concentrating on the gold coins. In correspondence with Roosevelt he said that by all accounts his favorite motif was the Flying Eagle used on cents of the 1857 era, this serving as an inspiration for the reverse of the presently offered double eagle. His use of Roman numerals for the date was also innovative in an American coin design, the only time these appear on a coin meant for circulation. (In 1986, the Eagle bullion coin series was introduced and it had the date in Roman numerals for the first few years.) (PCGS # 9135) .
Estimated Value $20,000 - 22,000.

1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, wire rim. PCGS graded MS-63. Popular coin and always in demand. A frosty overdate with eruptions of bright gold, pale orange, and shimmering originality on both sides. Nearly fully struck, however just a hint of limitation in the detail at the central hair behind Liberty's ear; the eagle, as is most fortunate on these 1802-dated coins, is very bold from a firm strike by the dies, showing clarity that the collector will appreciate. No sooner will the door close behind this coin's sale then it will be off the market again, possibly for years and years. A serious buyer will want to pause to take a long look and then establish a worthwhile bid (PCGS # 9135) .

1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, wire rim. NGC graded MS-62. Lightly toned and well struck. A lovely satin-gold example with subtle reddish highlights that add a touch of originality to the swirling luster artifacts in the surfaces. Several light contact marks are noticed in the devices and the normal stacking friction here and there but choice throughout and eye-appealing as one of only two Roman numerals gold coin minted by the U.S. before the modern period of the late 20th century, the other being the 1915-S Pan-Pacific fifties.

1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, wire rim. AU-58. Lightly cleaned at one time but with the choice, smooth surface still amply rewarding to the appreciative eye. There is luster throughout this handsomely made coin. When the mint decided to reduce the relief to the less impressive flat relief later in 1907, changed also was the date, which lost its Roman numerals and suffered accordingly. This is an American classic!

1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, flat rim. NGC graded MS-63. Untoned. There are relatively few distractions, primarily a few marks on on either side of Liberty, but otherwise a choice example of this popular first-year issue. The surfaces have a satiny to muted, matte-like appearance with bright honey-tan and green-gold coloration. Crisply struck, as is appropriate to the issue, this coin would do justice to either a Select double eagle collection or a Mint State type set.
